Paper Excrescence is an installation for the MAK Nite Lomography, MAK Vienna curated by Marlies Wirth.
exhibited structure of Lomo pictures
Excrescence refers to the collective “Lomo Walls”, where single pictures sized 7 to 10cm are mounted on flat surfaces to produce a collage . The arrayed images produce a collective image with colourful patterns and graphic effects.

basic geometry consists of three foto prints

spatial aggregations of the basic element
Excrescence invents a three-dimensional aggregation of the lomographic pictures. The 3-dimensional pixel consists of three pictures in a radial array that can be geometrically described as an extrusion of a triangle with bent edges. Grouped around an octahedron, 4 extruded triangles constitute the next level of base elements. The following aggregation step is a closed chain of 6. An array of spheres can be inscribed into the aggregation, which explains its structural performance (close-packing of spheres).
close-packing of inscribed spheresThe structural performance of the structure results from a combination of geometrical properties and the material characteristics of the bent paper.

impression of exhibitionThe pictures used for the installation were taken at market places. They focus on random aggregation patterns of everyday goods, like fruits and vegetables based on the principle of close-packing. The pictures show a similar effect as the Lomo Walls: The single object steps into the background, fusing with a surrounding area to produce colourful pattern effects.

The installation was presented at the MAK Vienna at a special event celebrating the Lomo LC-A Anniversary. (MAK NITE Lomography, 20. Oct. 2009, Curator: Marlies Wirth) Watch a video clip from the opening party at You Tube.
